DTE Energy offers Washtenaw County residents opportunity to earn trees and balance carbon emissions

What: During the month of June, DTE will plant 10 trees in Northview Park in Saline if 80 Washtenaw County residents enroll in Natural Gas Balance. This program offers customers an opportunity to balance up to 100% of their natural gas emissions, which ultimately contributes to their carbon footprint and climate change.

When: Throughout the month of June

Why: DTE Gas plans to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions through an innovative plan that includes both its suppliers and customers. Natural Gas Balance is a voluntary program that gives DTE customers an opportunity to balance up to 100% of the natural gas emissions and carbon footprint of the average Michigan home.

For as low as the cost of a cup of coffee, residential and small business customers can address 25 to 100% of the average home’s natural gas emissions.

To achieve this, DTE uses a robust carbon offset program that protects more than 20,000 acres of forests in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Sustained, healthy forests act as natural scrubbers that absorb and balance CO2 in the atmosphere. The program also helps expand the development and use of renewable natural gas. Methane emitted from landfills and wastewater recovery facility plants from waste created by households is trapped and impurities are removed, creating a cleaner source of gas for homes and businesses.

Our highest impact plan, which addresses up to 100% of a home’s carbon emissions, is the equivalent of removing over 13,000 miles

driven in an average gasoline-powered car, or recycling 3,600 pounds of waste instead of disposing of it in a landfill.

DTE will plant 10 trees in Northview Park in Saline this year if 80 Washtenaw County residents enroll in Natural Gas Balance during the month of June. This is a unique opportunity where our customers will get an extra incentive to balance their carbon footprint. Not only will Washtenaw County customers who enroll be helping to protect the environment for generations to come, but they will also be adding directly to their community’s environment by earning trees for Northview Park.

We hope this incentivizes more of our customers to sign up for this environmentally beneficial program and start addressing their carbon footprint.
